Once you get yourself into
over clocking and tweaking out your computers, your
going to find yourself resetting the BIOS more than
a few times. Like me, I enjoy pushing my system to the
max - however push it too far and I'll be opening my
case and searching for this little tiny jumper usually
buried under my sound card.
Well
NO MORE!
With this little easy to
do tip, you can just turn off your computer and flip
a switch - then back again. The BIOS will be reset in
seconds ~ all on the outside of the case. Some motherboards
offer a special key to hold down on the keyboard to
reset the BIOS, however this only seems to work on PS/2
keyboards. So with this mod, whether you use a USB keyboard
or your mobo doesn't support this feature - this should
help.
All parts we will need:
-An On/Off switch with
three leads
-One set of Led's that are paired together
-One Led by itself
-Solder (optional)
-Electrical tape
First of all you need to
find a switch with three (3) connections on it. Most
motherboards have a 3-pin connection on them to reset
the BIOS. You just move the jumper over one pin and
back again - while the middle jumper is always connected
and boom, it's reset.
I had this switch laying
around. It's already on a PCI rail, but wouldn't really
matter. You can mount this where ever you see fit.

The next step was to find
a set of Led's that were wired close together. I grabbed
this reset Led from my stash.

Strip down the ends with
your wire strippers. Now we need a third Led to make
this process work. I used an old internal speaker for
the job. Yes, there is now purpose to have one of these
laying around.

We only need one of these
wires so cut the plastic off in the middle of the wires.

Careful not to cut the wires
- just slowly cut the plastic.
At this point go ahead and
solder the wires to the switch. It doesn't matter which
wires go to the three connectors. However it will matter
when it's time to put all three Led's together - you
just need to worry about the middle connection on the
switch going to the middle Led.
So here is after I soldered.

Now find the middle wire
and the middle Led.

Grab the Led that was cut
all by itself and glue/bond this to the outside of this.

Once secured I also used
electrical tape to secure it further. Also
use electrical tape on the solder points as well.
Ready to be installed. I
had to remove my sound card to get to my BIOS jumper
- and it's so tiny to get a hold of.
Now, one side will be "off"
and one will be "on". If you know your switch,
then you know which way to place this on the motherboard.
What I did was turn off my PC, make the connection to
the mother board and try to turn on the PC. The PC did
not turn on, so I flipped the switch and turned it back
on.. of course my BIOS was reset but I'm just fine with
that. But if your not fine with that, make sure your
know your switch.
Once secured, I'd recommend
looming or wrapping up the wires so it's "pretty".
Do as I say.. not as I do.
Here is the switch from the
outside.
Now, once I tweak a little
too hard and need to reset the BIOS, I don't need to
open the side of the case... I love it.

Update: A friendly viewer
by the name of Hani just mentioned
he did the same thing only he used a CD-ROM audio cable.
This makes since due to the fact it is already equipped
with three cables.
