Scumware Test on Vista

*I don't have Vista - this is just what I "heard".

I know Vista wont be out for another year (or 5), but we decided to test scumware installs and cleaning on WIndows Vi$ta. These are basic tests - for now. Just standard spyware/adware. I will (err, I'm sure somebody will) test hard core trojans and worms soon to update this page.

Let get started.
Notice that Vista has browsing issues (resolving DNS or IP's - or something). However it still works fine in most cases (the key word is "beta").

Installing Spyware (that's right Claria - "Scumware")
180solutions.
MySearch.
Starware.
GotSmiley.

It actually took effort to install this trash. IE7 gives the activeX block bar at the top - you have to accept that - refresh the page - then you get with Windows warning. Once we accept all these precautions - we did get these all installed. Once these where installed we had the really cool bars on the top of IE7 and MySearch was on Firefox 1.0.6. (yaaa!)

So while these "features" where running - I rebooted the PC a couple times and started using them to search (with IE) and play. Anything "free" I clicked on while searching.

The odd thing was that all the extra "search" bars just searched for me. No pop-ups , re-directs, hijacks etc. nothing. No matted what I did, for how long I never even got a notice of a popup or hijack. Very strange.

Also notice that msconfig is not installed. This is hopefully going to be there after this beta - but who knows.

So I used the msconfig.exe from the download.

But check out the message I get when I try to modify the startup list. "Must be Admin".

However it still works - and gives you the message that the startup has been changed when you reboot.

Now to the scumware. I could not get Gator itself installed:

Here is some screen shots of installed scumware on IE7.

The 180Solutions was running in the task bar. Also not shown here was the really cool search bar at the bottom of IE.

Now it's time to use my favorite scumware cleaners - just testing to see how good they do on a new OS that has not been really tried yet.

Ad-Aware 6
Cannot update - shows update available - but wont update. However it did clean many scumware's.

Spybot
Will not update - shows updated available. Cannot run without updates (in the latest version). So this is no good. I will try to update manually.

M$Anti-Spyware
Updated. Scanned and cleaned only 180solutions. Seemed to run fine, but really bogged the system down to a craw.

NOD32
Updated. Found and cleaned many scumware's. The only one that actually worked correctly. (As always). Even here while I'm updating - it already wants to start cleaning.

more to come.

Testing Now:
Installing Trojans

Installing Worms

Installing Viruses
